Telepass Italy 2026: toll box for holidaymakers and commuters

What is Telepass for Italy?

Telepass is the leading electronic toll collection system in Italy. It works similarly to other toll boxes in Europe (e.g. Liber-t in France or Via Verde in Portugal). The box is installed in the vehicle and communicates automatically with the toll stations. The fees are billed monthly, so you don't have any cash or credit card problems at the toll booth.

Advantages of Telepass for travellers to Italy

  • Time savings: No queuing at toll booths – ideal for holidaymakers and frequent travellers.

  • Transparent billing: Toll charges are billed monthly, with a detailed list of the routes travelled. This avoids surprises and makes it easier to control costs.

  • Convenience: No need for small change or credit cards – everything is automatic.

  • Security: Less cash and cards in the car means less risk of theft.

  • Environmentally friendly: Fewer traffic jams at toll booths = lower CO₂ emissions.

  • Parking service: With our parking service, many car parks (in Germany) can be used without a ticket. Billing is handled via the toll box.

The Italian toll box is ideal for:

  • Holidaymakers travelling by car through Italy and other countries.

  • Commuters who regularly use Italian motorways.

  • Haulage companies and businesses that frequently travel in Italy.

Vehicle classes

Toll charges in Italy are based on the vehicle class, which is determined by the number of axles on the vehicle, including trailers. For vehicles with two axles, there is an additional classification based on the height of the first axle: up to 1.3 metres and over 1.3 metres.

In toll tunnels, such as Mont Blanc or St. Bernard, other subdivisions and restrictions for larger vehicles are possible.

Fees are payable at each toll station and are divided into the following categories:

Features of the Telepass

The Telepass is a compact electronic toll box that you simply attach to your vehicle's windscreen. Here is an overview of its key features:

  • Size & shape: The Telepass is about the size of a credit card (approx. 8.5 x 5.5 cm) and has a flat, rectangular shape. It is slim and inconspicuous, so it does not obstruct your view.

  • Attachment: The Telepass is attached to the windscreen behind the rear-view mirror – either with an adhesive pad or a suction cup mount. Installation takes just a few seconds.

  • Technology: Inside is a transponder that automatically communicates with the toll stations. As soon as you pass a toll station, the signal is detected and the barrier opens without you having to stop.

Travel comfortably in South Tyrol with Telepass!

Those travelling to South Tyrol by car will particularly benefit from Telepass. The region is a popular destination for holidaymakers from all over Europe – whether for hiking in the Dolomites, skiing or a city break to Bolzano or Merano. The roads and toll stations are particularly busy during the peak season. With a Telepass, you can avoid long waiting times and start your holiday in a more relaxed manner.

Convenience for travellers in the Alps

South Tyrol is home to several important motorway sections leading to Lake Garda, Verona and Brenner. The use of a Telepass is particularly noticeable on the Autostrada A22 (Brenner motorway): instead of having to stop at toll stations, you can continue driving directly on the marked Telepass lane. This not only saves time, but also nerves – especially when travelling with family, caravans or bicycles. Even those who are only spending a weekend in South Tyrol or passing through the region on their way to central or southern Italy benefit from its ease of use.
