    2. Simply drive to the specified collection point.

    3. You can collect your ‘Small Toll Box Standard’ there using the barcode from your order confirmation email.

    4. Please assemble the ‘Small Toll Box Standard’ according to the enclosed instructions and travel to your holiday (Italy, France, Spain, Portugal) without any traffic jams or stress.

  • Installation

The Toll Box is already activated on receipt and ready for immediate use. Installing our Toll Box is simple and straightforward. This is how you proceed:

    • Find the right place for the Toll Box on your windscreen.

    • Clean the corresponding spot on the windscreen.

    • Press the holder with the adhesive spot onto the windscreen.

    Important notes on installation

If you have a coated windscreen, it is essential to fit the Toll Box in the uncoated recess (see vehicle manual). This is usually marked by a dotted area. For motorhomes with an alcove and without a coated/heated windscreen, we recommend attaching it to the centre of the windscreen approx. 15 cm above the dashboard.

The Toll Box from maut1.de can of course also be used with a motorbike. We recommend stowing the Toll Box (protected from rain and cold) in a tank bag on the motorbike so that it is facing forwards in the direction of travel.

  • Note France

In France, the toll is based on the actual height (without superstructures) and actual weight of the vehicle at the toll station.

For motorhomes, a height of 3 metres and a weight of 3.5 tonnes are decisive. If both values are exceeded, a Toll Box is required for large and heavy vehicles, according to the toll operator.

In practice, however, there is a certain tolerance: you only need the ‘Large Toll Box’ if you weigh more than 4.5 tonnes and/or are over 3.05 metres high.

    Examples:

    • 4.5 tonnes and 2.95 metres -> ‘Small Toll Box’ works

    • 4.6 tonnes and 2.95 metres -> ‘Large Toll Box’ works

    • 4.2 tonnes and 3.05 metres -> ‘Small Toll Box’ works

    • 4.2 tonnes and 3.06 metres -> ‘Large Toll Box’ works

    Measured is:

Pure vehicle height, superstructures do not count.

Actual weight while travelling, not permissible total weight.

    More than 2 axles:

Vehicles with at least 3 axles always require the ‘Large Toll Box’, regardless of height and weight. A tandem axle is measured as one axle in France.

(For the ‘Large Toll Box’, the data from the vehicle licence must be provided for Austria).

Trailer included? - Not relevant for the selection of the Toll Box.

These examples are recommendations without guarantee, as categorisation takes place automatically at the toll station. Please check your vehicle documents to determine the appropriate Toll Box. Many newer motorhomes and campers remain under 3 metres.

Vehicles over 3.5 t permissible total weight (according to the vehicle registration document)

For vehicles over 3.5 t permissible total weight, the “Toll Box for motorhomes over 3 m height” or, for commercially registered vehicles, the “Toll Box for commercial trucks” can generally be used on all roads in Austria. If you are also interested in using this toll box in France, please make sure to inform yourself on the page about the regulations for France.

Your advantages with the “Toll Box for motorhomes over 3 m height”:

  • One Toll Box for several countries
  • No additional power supply required
  • No need to preload credit – you will receive the invoice by email after your trip and the amount will be charged to the stored payment method.

Toll for vehicles up to 3.5 t (according to the vehicle registration document)

There is no toll box available for Austria for vehicles up to 3.5 t permissible total weight. In this case, the toll must be paid using a vignette and the section toll (e.g. Brenner). A digital e-vignette can easily be purchased via our partner mautwelt.de. The section toll can be purchased on site or digitally directly from the toll operator.

Toll rates in Austria

Toll rates for vignette and section toll up to 3.5 t

For the vignette, which applies to all vehicles up to 3.5 t weight, a distinction is made between the vehicle type: motorcycle or passenger car, and the validity period: 1-day, 10-day, 1-month and 1-year vignette. On special toll routes (see the list below), a flat-rate fee is also charged.

GO toll rates over 3.5 t

The amount of the “GO toll” for all vehicles over 3.5 t depends on the distance travelled and certain vehicle data, such as the number of axles and the EURO emission class. The toll becomes more expensive the further you travel, the more axles the vehicle has and the lower the EURO emission class is. Since 2017, there has also been an additional surcharge for traffic-related noise pollution.

A list of the special toll routes with prices can be found further below.

Special toll charges

Besides the regular motorways, there are separate tunnels, mountain pass roads and car shuttle trains.

Toll in Austria: Everything you need to know

Note for motorhomes: Since December 1, 2023, the calculation of toll liability in Austria is no longer based on the maximum permissible total weight (GVW) but on the technically permissible total mass (TPM). In the future, the technically permissible total mass (TPM) will determine whether a vehicle is subject to the vignette requirement and section toll (up to 3.5 tonnes TPM) or the GO toll requirement (more than 3.5 tonnes TPM).

Transitional period until January 31, 2029:

For all vehicles that were first registered for road traffic before December 1, 2023

  • with a technically permissible total mass of more than 3.5 tonnes, and

  • with a maximum permissible total weight of no more than 3.5 tonnes,

the vignette requirement and section toll for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes (TPM) will continue to apply until January 31, 2029, in accordance with (§ 33 para. 18 no. 8 BStMG).

“GO Box” or “Toll Box”?

The “GO Box” is the Toll Box of the Austrian toll operator ASFINAG and is specifically and exclusively activated for Austria. The “Toll Box for vehicles over 3 m height” from maut1 can be used in Austria instead of the GO Box for vehicles weighing more than 3.5 t.

Your advantages with the maut1 Toll Box:

  • No need to preload credit

  • No need to upload the vehicle registration document

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Tolls in Austria

  • For which vehicles do drivers have to set the number of axles?

The driver must additionally specify the number of axles. Only commercially used vehicles must set the number of axles. If your vehicle is registered as a commercially used vehicle, you must check before each trip in Austria whether the current setting is correct.

To check the number of axles, briefly press the button on the Toll Box. The current setting will light up. To change the number of axles, press the button until the next axle number lights up. Once the correct number of axles is set, you can start your journey.

  • Should you carry a vehicle declaration in Austria?

You will receive a vehicle declaration with your delivery. The vehicle declaration is a document containing relevant vehicle data. In Austria, you are required to carry this document with you and present it during inspections.

  • What should I do if my Toll Box is not working?

In Austria, you must always pay attention to the “beep sound.” If the box does not emit a beep or emits four beeps, you must report to a GO Point within 5 hours / 100 km in order to pay the outstanding toll.

  • What is the difference between the Toll Box and the GO Box for Austria?

The “GO Box” is the Toll Box of the Austrian toll operator ASFINAG and is specifically and exclusively activated for Austria. The “Toll Box for vehicles over 3 m height” from maut1 can be used in Austria instead of the GO Box for vehicles weighing more than 3.5 t.

Your advantages with the maut1 Toll Box:

    • No need to preload credit

    • No need to upload the vehicle registration document

  • Are there roads without motorway tolls in Austria?

Yes, on the A1, A12 and A14, drivers from Germany can travel without purchasing a vignette as far as Salzburg or Kufstein (connection to Kitzbühel).

  • What is the difference between tolls for large vehicles and the vignette requirement?

Vehicles and large motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes GVW must pay tolls in Austria based on the distance travelled using a Toll Box. A certain amount is charged per kilometre driven, which depends, among other things, on the EURO emission class and the number of axles.

All other vehicles are subject to the vignette requirement on toll roads in Austria. Vignettes are small stickers that are placed on the vehicle’s windshield, or they can be registered digitally and are valid for a certain period of time (e.g. 1 month).

  • Is a digital vignette more expensive than a regular vignette?

No, the digital vignette costs the same as the traditional sticker vignette.

  • What happens if you do not have a vignette for Austria?

If you are caught driving on an Austrian motorway without a valid vignette, you must pay a substitute toll of €120 for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes. For motorcycles, the substitute toll is €65.

  • When do I have to pay tolls in Austria?

The vignette must be purchased before entering the motorway – either online or as a sticker vignette that is attached to the windshield. Tolls in Austria are mandatory. Anyone who does not comply with the rules must expect high substitute toll charges.
